Until this year, the company had experienced 11 straight years of strong profit and revenue growth. The growth can basically be attributed to the company’s civil aerospace unit, which accounted for 43% of the total sales in 2013. The civil aerospace unit of Rolls-Royce successfully met the rising demand from Airbus and Boeing for their fuel-efficient engines for passenger jets.

The current downturn of the company and decline in its share prices is majorly the outcome of cancellations and delayed orders in the oil and gas, mining, construction, industrial and agricultural sectors. This resulted in share prices shrinking by 16% in that period. John Rishton, chief executive of the company and the mastermind behind the redundancy and restructuring decisions, blamed the general economic conditions and the effect of declining Russian trade for a fall in the expected revenue and zero profit growth during this year.
