英文を読むためのテクニック　Strategic Readerになるために②

昨日に続き、Business English Pro講座のReading Strategiesの中からスキミングという読むためのテクニックを紹介します。 BEPro講座は、得てして最新のトップビジネス誌の内容が教材になっている事から受講者の方々も①記事を読む。②設問に答える。③語彙を増やす。という３本柱で学習を進められている場合が多いと思います。　ただ、このReading Strategiesの様々な技術を日々、記事を読む上で活用していけば、読む際の視点が変わります。また読む速度も上がるわけです。

スキミング

スキミングは、プレ･リーディング・テクニックの中で最も簡単で重要なものです。スキミングとは、記事全体にざっと目を通して大まかな印象をつかむ作業です。記事を一語一語読むのではなく、記事の目立った箇所（記事のタイトル、表題、小見出し、表）と記事の主眼となる部分が書かれている部分を見つけます。学習者の中には、日本語の新聞を読む際、各記事の見出しやキーワードを一瞥してその記事を読むか読まないかを決めるなど、既にこのテクニックを使っている方もいるでしょう。スキミングをする際には、以下の点に着目しましょう。

記事のタイトル／何について書かれた記事なのか
連載コラムの一部かどうか／執筆者名の有無
いつ書かれた記事か
段落や小見出しの有無
記事の長さ／読み終わるまでにどのくらいかかりそうか
自分にとっての記事の難易度
引用符の多さ（引用符が多いと、その記事は個人の意見や専門用語を含んでいると予想できる）
太字やイタリック体で書かれている箇所--これらは特別な用語や重要な部分を示す
写真、表、絵はあるか？

そして、記事の要旨とより多くの情報を把握するためには、以下の手順を踏みます。

記事の第一段落を読む--第一段落ではトピックが紹介されることが多く、この後どのように記事が展開していくかを知ることが出来ます。
各段落の最初の１,２文を読む--これにより各段落の要旨がわかります。
記事の最終段落を読む--最終段落では結論を知ることが出来ます。

読む前にこれだけ多くの事をしなければならないのかと、初めは驚かれるかもしれません。　しかしこのテクニックは、時間を節約し、理解を容易にし、記事に含まれる情報を記憶にとどめておくのに必ず役立ちます。

Skimming

Perhaps the easiest and also the most important pre-reading strategy is skimming. This means running your eyes very quickly over the entire article to gain a general impression. You are not reading every word; instead, you are looking for major sections (title, headlines, subheadings, charts) and important parts of the article. You probably already use this skill when you read a print newspaper in Japanese: you quickly glance at the titles and key words in each article to see whether you want to read them more closely or not. Here are some things to look for when you skim:

What is the title of the article? What will the article be about?
Is the article part of a regular column? Is the author's name listed?
When was the article written?
Are there any sections or headings?
How long is the article? How long will it take you to read it?
Does the article seem difficult, easy, or about your level?
Are there a lot of quotation marks? (Then you can guess that the article contains people's opinions and/or specialized terms).
Are there any words marked by bold print or italics? These show special terms or important categories.
Are there any pictures, charts, or other graphics?

Then, to gather more information and the main ideas of the article:

Read the first paragraph of the article. It probably introduces the topic and lets you know how the article will develop.
Read the first one or two sentences of each paragraph. They probably tell you the main idea of the paragraph.
Read the last paragraph of the article. It probably gives a concluding idea.

At first, this might seem like a lot of work to do before you even begin to read! But remember that this technique will actually help you save time, understand the article better, and remember the information more easily.
