Thanksgiving Day　感謝祭の意味とは？

1620年、ピルグリムと呼ばれるイギリスからの植民者の一団が、現在の米国マサチューセッツ州に到着しました。 米国での最初の冬に、食物が尽き、植民者の約半数が死んでしまいました。 しかし、入植者達は「ワンパノアグ」と呼ばれるネイティブ・アメリカンの部族と仲良くなりました。 このワンパノアグの人々は入植者に新しい土地で食べ物を栽培する方法を教えてあげました。 そして1621年の秋には、この二つの集団が食べ物を供出して3日間に渡る祝宴を開き、入植者が新しい土地で無事に生き残ったことを祝いました。 米国人の多くは、米国が伝統的に祝う"Thanksgiving Day"　（感謝際）は、この祝宴をそのまま継承したものだと信じています。 ところが、この1621年の祝宴は繰り返されることが無かったのです。また、1789年にジョージ・ワシントンが合衆国の正式な成立を祝って "Thanksgiving"　（感謝）の日を宣言しましたが、この祝日も繰り返されることはありませんでした。"Thanksgiving Day"が国家的祝日として 公式に認められ、11月の第4木曜日に制定されたのは、1941年になってからのことでした。 今日、感謝祭は家族や友人がワイワイ集まって、七面鳥のロースト、マッシュポテト、クランベリー・ソースやパンプキン・パイなど、 大量の食べ物をおなかに詰め込む日になっています。ネイティブ・アメリカンと彼らの文化を破壊したことを象徴するものとして、感謝祭を祝うこと自体に反対する人々もいます。 しかし、殆どの人々は感謝際を、単に、日常生活における恵みに感謝し、愛する人々と一緒に過ごす機会ととらえています。

In 1620, a group of English settlers called the Pilgrims arrived in what is now the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. During the first winter, food supplies ran low and about half of the settlers died. However, the group was befriended by the Wampanoags, a local Native American tribe. The Indians taught them how to grow food in the new land and in the autumn of 1621, the two groups combined their food supplies and held a three-day feast to celebrate the settlers' survival. Many Americans believe that the U.S. tradition of Thanksgiving Day is a direct descendent of this feast. However, the celebration was not repeated. George Washington declared a day of Thanksgiving in 1789 to celebrate the formal establishment of the United States, but again the holiday was not repeated. It wasn't until 1941 that Thanksgiving was officially declared a national holiday, with the date set as the fourth Thursday in November. Thanksgiving practices today usually involve gathering with family and friends and gorging on an enormous amount of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. There has been some objection to the holiday on the basis that it symbolizes the destruction of Native Americans and their culture. However, most people simply view it as an opportunity to share the day with their loved ones while reflecting on the blessings in their lives.
