英語は、一語（単語）では意味がとれているつもりが、熟語になったりフレーズとしてつながるとと、いきなり別の生きものになってしまう場合がありますね。
特に、idiomatic なものがその最たるもの。
up, into, outなどが後ろにくっつくだけで意味をつくりあげてしまう。。。。
アルファベットも２６文字だけなので、そこはやはり組み合わせの文化なのでしょうね。
さて、本日はPencil Inという言い回しについて一言。 In(Inn)といっても「鉛筆ホテル」ということではないのです。
I pencilled in July 4th as a possible date for our next meeting.The launch date of our new product has been pencilled in for this coming October.
どうやら、スケジュールに関係があるらしい言い回しのようだ。
辞書を引くと
You make an arrangement to do something or see somebody but you know you may have to change it.
と書かれてました。
つまり、予定に入れておく（でも変更の可能性もあり）という意味合いのようです。
Let me pencil that in for next Friday. それは次の金曜日に予定しておくよ。
そんな風に使うようです。
pencil something (somebody) in ～ 予定にいれておく、予定表に書き込む
これでまた、一つ使えそうな英語表現を覚えました。
