New Supervisor Introduction
Dear BePro Learners:
Greetings and welcome to our exciting English learning programs for business professionals! I have just been hired as the Executive Supervisor for Curriculum Development. I hope that you will find the course content at the right level for you and that you will gain confidence in your English language skills. Furthermore, I hope that you will enjoy improving your English vocabulary, reading comprehension and reading speed as you progress through our courses. I believe that you will find that the course content is relevant to your work.
I am delighted to be working again with motivated Japanese learners. I’ll be developing the curriculum for various BEPro programs with learners like you in mind. I lived and worked in Tokyo for nearly 18 years. I was an in-house trainer for two major companies, one Japanese and one American.
During my time at these companies, I developed training materials, including on-line courses. I also taught intensive courses, extensive courses and one-on-one lessons, which I found very rewarding. I enjoyed teaching my Japanese business students because they had specific goals, and they were determined to reach those goals.
Having at least a basic understanding of English is very important in today’s world, especially for business people. While you may never need to speak it, you will likely need to read or write it. Vocabulary is the basis of all communication in any language. The broader your vocabulary, the more you will understand and the more effectively you will be able to communicate.
In these courses, you will find the vocabulary graded to your level: Beginner, Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced. The vocabulary at the lower levels is vocabulary which is basic and which you will see recycled many times and at different levels. The more you encounter a word, the more likely you’ll be to be able to actually use it. You may find keeping a wordlist helpful, and it is, provided you review it regularly and use the words!
How to Study
Learning online takes enormous self-discipline. It is better to do a little work every day than try to do several hours in one day. Make it part of your routine. You could, for example, decide to study for 15 minutes every day at lunchtime. If you have a long commute and are lucky enough to get a seat on the train, you could study on the train on the way to the office.
How to Read
As far as reading is concerned, you need to be willing to be a risk-taker…..at least a little bit! When you read, you want to start by doing a quick preview of the document:
Read the title.
Who is the author? Is it someone famous? Is his/her writing known to be bjective?
Read any subtitles and headings.
Look at any illustrations or photos.
Look at anything that has been bolded or italicized.
Read the first paragraph.
Read the final paragraph.
Read the first sentence of each paragraph.
Ask yourself what you think the general idea of the document is.
Ask yourself some questions about what you think might be included in the articl
Then read the document:
Read without stopping.
As you read, if you do not know a word, then try to guess, but do not stop. You can highlight it and return to it later and then look it up in the dictionary. if you cannot guess the meaning.
Do not regress! Do not go back to the previous sentence. Keep going in one direction only!
Try to read in chunks. That means try to look at four or five words at a time.
Ask yourself what the article is about and try to summarize it simply.
You will find that the various exercises that BEPro offers to be interesting, fun, a little challenging, and educational. The business vocabulary will be reinforced repeatedly in different ways so that by the time you finish your course, you will actually know it and be able to use it! Also, your reading comprehension and reading speed should improve considerably after you have worked your way through the course.
The articles are taken from The Financial Times and The Economist, two leading business publications in the English-speaking and business worlds. The content is current and relevant to business people.
By the way, later this year, we plan to launch a business writing course which focuses on effective summary writing. You will be able to use the effective reading habits you acquire in these BEPro courses in other courses, and, of course, in your everyday reading.
I look forward to producing materials that motivate you to learn.
Sincerely,
Claudia Colnar
