Iceland has blocked a Chinese billionaire’s bid to buy 300 square kilometres of undeveloped land. Some worried that the vast land sale would give Beijing a strategic foothold in the North Atlantic.
Huang Nubo is one of China’s richest men. In the early 1990s, he founded a tourism business. Ogmundur Jonasson, Iceland’s interior minister, rejected Mr Huang’s application. Mr Jonasson said it breached rules on investments by non-European groups.
Mr Huang had planned to build a resort on the mostly barren land. But, the large tract is close to Iceland’s deepwater ports. Some officials had raised security concerns.
Mr Huang is a mountaineer and a poet. During university he shared a room with an Icelandic student studying in Beijing.
