If the plot reminds the reader of a Shakespearean comedy, it would just be a close coincidence. Mylan is being chased by Teva. But Mylan dislikes its admirer and runs away to announce its love for Perrigo, while keeping some poison handy, in case it is forced to marry Teva. Perrigo, however, declines Mylan’s proposal. Surrounded with admirers, Perrigo is waiting to grab the best offer--possibly from Teva itself. Midsummer might not be around the corner but the unfolding drama with three generic-drug makers in line could well prolong until then.

Earlier this week, Netherlands based generic drug dealer, Mylan, declined a $40 billion bid from Teva, of Israel, arguing in return that it “lacks industrial logic”. To keep itself on the safer side, it has enacted a sort of poison-pill defense strategy against hostile takeover. If the world’s largest generic-drug maker, Teva unites with the third-largest, Mylan, the resultant would be a company worth $30 billion of annual revenues and $2 billion in cost savings, admits Teva. As part of Mylan’s strategy to escape Teva’s control, it has made three successive merger offers to Perrigo, a smaller Irish opponent, but got rejected each time.
